The de-silting of the bay
2007-2012
In 1995, the State, the Region of Lower Normandy, the Region of Brittany and the Municipality of the Mont Saint Michel signed the plan for returning the Mont Saint Michel to its original maritime character.
The goal of the plan is to restore the landscape of shores and sea surrounding the Mont Saint Michel.
The De-Silting Plan for the Mont Saint Michel is one of the biggest ecological construction sites in the world. It is made up of four main plans:
Reactivating and strengthening the currents of the Couesnon in order to shift sediment by means of a dam. It will be fitted with floodgates which can be opened in either direction to help the tide go in and out.
Replacing the dike-road built at the end of the XIXth century with a pedestrian bridge: this will make it possible to restore the tidal movements of the sea and of the Couesnon around the Mont Saint Michel, thus accelerating the shifting of the sediment.
Moving managed parking areas around the Mont Saint Michel to the mainland in order to remove a further obstruction to the work of nature, at the same time improving the appearance of the Marvel of the West.
Setting up a system of shuttles for visitors, who will benefit from greater comfort and a better reception, operating between the Mont Saint Michel and the mainland.
The work, programmed over a five year period, will give back to the Mont Saint Michel its original character, both marine and majestic.
