The history of La Mere Poulard and Mont-Saint-Michel are closely related.
Born in 1852, Annette has twenty years when the Mont-Saint-Michel will open again to the world after being a prison since the French Revolution of 1789. It was also at this time that the young Annette get married with the baker's son of Mont Saint-Michel, Victor Poulard, who will accompany faithfully and discreetly throughout her life in her two passions: cooking and Mont-Saint-Michel.
The tradition of hospitality is millennial at Mont-Saint-Michel since the Middle Ages, the people of Mont-Saint-Michel - the Montois - welcome pilgrims in their Inns where they find food and accomodation.
It is therefore natural that Annette and Victor Poulard in 1888 opened their inn in the heart of the medieval city of Wonder of the West, to accommodate pilgrims and gourmets of the world.
Quickly recognized, the immense talent of Annette Poulard and some seven hundred recipes she has created during his long career, give her the honorary title of "Mère" that distinguishes her exceptional cook and her contribution to the reputation of French gastronomy : this is how the name of La Mère Poulard is born.
Famous worldwide for its famous omelette cooked over a wood fire, La Mère Poulard is still an institution of French cuisine with varied cuisine, inventive and light, which combines tradition, modernity and simplicity.
