The Mont-Saint-Michel is located in the middle of a bay of 40 000 hectares. Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is washed by the Manche sea bordering its shores and crossed by three rivers: the Couesnon, the See and the Sélune.
Twice a day the tides of Mont-Saint-Michel Bay invade. It is characterized by movement amount (flow) and descending (reflux) of the sea caused by the combined effect of gravitational forces of the moon and sun as well as the configuration of the coasts, some, like the Mont-Saint-Michel bay, accentuate the amplitude of the waves.
From an amplitude of about 13 meters of intensive day, the sea withdrew at high speed on a couple of kilometers, but returned as fast, twice a day repeating this incessant movement.
The tides cause significant mixing of waters, which promotes organic farming and thus enables the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel to enjoy exceptionally rich biological resources with a diverse and abundant wildlife.
The highest tides in the world, taking place in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, is a wonderful show that men have decided to preserve for future generations thanks to the Grand Restoration Project maritime character of Mont-Saint-Michel.
